Self-Control Bible Lesson from Genesis
By Heather McMillan
Once a month we publish a Bible lesson just for you to use in your home. This month's lesson is about self-control and is based on the story of Sodom and Gomorrah from Genesis.
In today’s Bible story from Genesis 19, we get to see that the Lord was merciful, taking Lot and his family by the hand and ushering them away from Sodom just in time.
We don’t often think about it, but Lot’s wife actually disobeyed twice. The second time really exposed what was in her heart.
As parents, taking our children by the hand to make them obey, is sometimes necessary.
But there will come a time when their own self-control is going to be called upon. We won’t be there to make the right choice for them.
When we teach our children to use self- control, we are teaching them to respond with obedience to even the smallest instructions. It’s often these choices that reveal whether the heart is yielded.
A yielded heart, more than just outward conformity, is what God is looking for. This brings to mind one of my favorite verses.
2 Chronicles 16:9 “For the eyes of the Lord look back and forth across the whole earth, looking for people whose hearts are perfect toward him, so that he can show his great power in helping them.”
I am praying for you, that the Lord will give you all the help you need, in raising children with yielded hearts.
